What a schematics licence actually saves you on a dead board

A worked example: no-charge iPhone, traced from symptom to component using voltage reference points instead of trial and error.

The argument for a schematics licence is not that diagrams are nice to have. It is that without them you are searching a board with roughly a thousand components and no map, and with them you are testing a hypothesis.

A worked example: no charge

A phone comes in dead. It does not charge, and it shows nothing on a supply. Without a schematic the usual approach is reflow the charging IC, replace the port, hope. Three of those attempts and an hour later you may still be where you started, and you have added heat cycles to a board that was only broken in one place.

With the board open in front of you, the sequence is different:

  1. Start at the symptom and find the charging rail on the schematic.
  2. Follow that net from the connector through every component in the path. Each one is labelled, so you can jump straight to its physical position on the boardview.
  3. Measure at the documented voltage and resistance points. The reference tells you what the reading should be — so a reading that disagrees is not ambiguous, it is the fault.
  4. Check the known-fault notes for that model before you desolder anything. The component that usually fails on that board is usually the one that failed on this board.

You have gone from a thousand components to one net, and often to one part, without removing anything.

Where the time actually goes

The saving is rarely in the repair itself. It is in the diagnosis, and in the repairs you do not attempt — the boards you can tell early are not economically fixable, and hand back the same day instead of after two hours of work you cannot charge for.

The other half: component search

Being able to type a designator and land on that component, both sides of the board, with its neighbours in context, sounds minor until you are looking for a 0201 resistor under a shield. It removes an entire category of squinting.

What it costs against what it saves

Licences start at a few tens of dollars for three months — the current figures are on the pricing page. Set that against the cost of a single misdiagnosed board: the parts you replaced that were fine, the hours, and the customer who was told a repair would work and then it did not.

For anyone doing board-level work more than occasionally, it stops being a question fairly quickly. If you are not sure whether your workload justifies it, the 3 month licence exists precisely so you can find out cheaply.
